The government has formed a specialised advisory body to support AI policy and regulation, aiming to bridge technical complexity and governance needs while aligning India’s approach with global standards and emerging technological challenges.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has established a dedicated expert committee to support the country’s evolving framework for artificial intelligence governance. The move comes as India accelerates efforts to create a balanced regulatory approach that encourages innovation while addressing risks associated with rapidly advancing AI technologies.
The newly formed Technology and Policy Expert Committee will function as a standing advisory body, working alongside the AI Governance and Economic Group, which has been set up to guide strategic direction and coordination across ministries. Together, these entities aim to strengthen India’s institutional capacity to respond to the growing influence of AI across sectors.
Bridging technology and policy
The expert committee has been tasked with providing specialised insights to help policymakers navigate the technical and strategic aspects of AI. Its role includes analysing emerging technologies, assessing potential risks, and identifying regulatory gaps that may arise as AI systems become more widespread.
The panel brings together representatives from academia, industry, and policy organisations, ensuring a diverse range of perspectives. Experts from leading institutions such as Indian Institute of Technology Madras and Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar are part of the committee, alongside industry bodies like NASSCOM, Data Security Council of India, and Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology.
In addition to domestic policy inputs, the committee will track international developments in AI regulation and advise on India’s engagement in global discussions. This is particularly significant as countries increasingly collaborate—and compete—in shaping the rules governing AI technologies.
Toward adaptive AI regulation
Within the broader governance structure, the AI Governance and Economic Group will focus on high-level strategy and coordination, while the expert committee will translate complex technological developments into actionable policy recommendations. This division of roles is intended to create a more responsive and informed decision-making process.
Officials indicate that the framework is designed to remain flexible and forward-looking, enabling the government to adapt to rapid changes in AI capabilities. By institutionalising expert-driven guidance, India aims to ensure that its regulatory approach remains aligned with both national priorities and global best practices.
The formation of this committee reflects a growing emphasis on structured governance in the AI domain. As India positions itself as a key player in the global technology landscape, such initiatives are expected to play a critical role in shaping responsible and effective AI adoption.
