Indian Students "to be on their toes" to leave Ukraine’s Sumy on short notice
The Indian Embassy has told the Indian students trapped at a medical college hostel in north-eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, to "be ready to leave on short notice". A team is positioned in Poltava - nearly a three-hour drive from Sumy - to coordinate the safe passage of the students.
Taking to Twitter, the Embassy wrote, “Team from the Embassy of India is stationed in Poltava City to coordinate the safe passage of Indian students stranded in Sumy to Western borders via Poltava. Confirmed time & date will be issued soon. Indian students advised to be ready to leave on short notice.”
Earlier, the stranded students shared videos saying they have decided to take a risky journey to the Russian border that's 50 kilometers away but later decided to stay put. The students said they could no longer cope with the nail-biting cold, depleting food supplies and having to melt snow to get drinking water.
The foreign ministry said, “The main challenges in evacuation of Indians from Sumy are ongoing shelling, violence and the lack of transportation.”
Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Hungary and Ukraine issued fresh advisories for the Indian nationals. The embassies in Hungary and Ukraine took to their Twitter handles and asked the stranded students staying in their own accommodations to reach the Hungary City Centre in Budapest between 10am and noon and also fill out a Google form on an ‘urgent basis’.
India has been urging Ukraine and Russia to impose a ceasefire in the north-eastern Ukrainian city to evacuate around 700 students, trapped after Russian troops invaded Ukraine.a India has brought back over 15,920 Indians in 76 flights under mission "Operation Ganga" launched last month.
