A shocking revelation has been made. According to a latest update, LCD televisions may soon go blank in India. Intending to focus more on LED TV segment, biggies in Indian LCD industry including Sony, Samsung, LG and Panasonic are likely to discontinue their LCD line-up and may even exit the category very soon.
Analysts believe, two major factors are basically giving rise to faster adoption of LED televisions in India. One is their performance and the other one is their low cost. Besides these, LED televisions are sleeker and offer better picture quality. Moreover, LED TVs consume at least 50 percent less power than LCD televisions.
Latest stats revealed that the sales of flat panel television market have grown by more than 20 percent. On the other hand, sales of LCD television have fallen by more than 50 percent this year.
According to Sunil Nayyar, Sales head at Sony India, "The LCD TV category will virtually extinguish by end-2013 as the price difference with LED televisions will cease to exist by then”.
Nayyar further added, “Since LED televisions are already dominating the world market, LCD panels will eventually cost more for TV makers as they would lose the benefits of economies of scale.”
Mahesh Krishnan, VP (consumer electronics) at Samsung India has also expressed his view. He said, “The way the price difference between LED and LCD TV has been decreasing, LED TVs will dominate the flat panel category. Samsung has already reduced its LCD TV model line-up from 15 models last year to four models now.”
