Kamal Haasan objects to the draft Digital PDP Bill in his letter to IT Minister
Claiming that the digital personal data protection bill will have a "draconian impact" on the Right to Information (RTI) Act, South Indian actor Kamal Haasan has written a letter to the Union IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
"The current draft of the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022 takes away this balancing test enshrined within the Right to Information Act, 2005 thereby rendering it toothless," Kamal Haasan wrote in his letter.
He further pointed out that the draft bill is only available in English and none of the regional languages of the country. He said that many Indians will be unable to give healthy feedback unless the draft is published in the regional languages.
The letter was shared on his Twitter handle.
"...many fellow citizens of India from my state as well as across India do not use English as their primary language of communication. It is critically important that the draft Bill be published in regional languages to allow for healthy consultative feedback from the citizens of India," the letter read.
Kamla Haasan asked the people of India to submit their feedback on the digital personal data protection bill in an effort to save Indian democracy.
"For any democracy to thrive it is imperative for its citizens to participate in it. This is just such a moment for our country. I urge all citizens of the country to prevent the draconian attack on RTI Act via the Data Protection Bill. Today is the last day for giving your feedback. I'm attaching my letter and the link where you can submit your opinion for your perusal. I urge all Indians to come together and save our democracy. #SaveRTI,"Haasan's tweet read.
