South Korean electronics giant LG Electronics is making a decisive strategic shift by moving capital goods production to India and investing ₹1,000 crore to establish a Global R&D Centre in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The move signals India’s growing prominence as a global manufacturing and innovation hub.
LG will relocate the production of high-tech machinery and equipment—critical to electronics and display manufacturing—from its existing plants in Korea, China, and Vietnam to India. This aligns with LG’s strategy to diversify supply chains and leverage India’s robust industrial ecosystem. Simultaneously, LG Corp, the parent entity, will set up a Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Noida Phase-II, spanning 7 acres and generating 500 jobs, with over 90% local hiring.
India offers cost advantages, policy support, and a vast domestic market. The Noida R&D hub aligns with Uttar Pradesh’s 2024 GCC Policy, designed to attract global technology centres. The new facility will integrate design, digital innovation, and product development, reinforcing India’s role as a key R&D hub in LG’s global network.
The move strengthens the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital Uttar Pradesh’ initiatives, demonstrating global confidence in India’s technological capabilities. LG’s investment is expected to boost local supply chains, create skilled jobs, and accelerate technology transfer across the electronics value chain. Analysts project India’s consumer electronics market to grow at ~14% CAGR through 2029, positioning LG to capture a larger market share.
While challenges remain—such as infrastructure readiness, skilled talent, and supply-chain logistics—LG’s investment marks a pivotal shift. The decision integrates manufacturing and R&D under one ecosystem, reinforcing India’s status as a strategic global hub for innovation-driven production and potentially paving the way for similar foreign investments in advanced electronics.
