Panel I - Effect of Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023
Sandeep Sengupta, MD, ISOAH Data Securities
Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) is not new into this corporate world. Before this DPDP there was GDPR for Europe. So, companies who had clients in Europe or having business there, they already were compliant to the GDPR. Prior to this there was PIMS and it was there for almost 10 years and a lot of companies were getting audited because they wanted to know whether the data protection privacy is getting maintained properly.
Dr. Pallab Ganguly, CISO Generation & Alt CISO Distribution, CESC
CESC has 33 million customers across Kolkata and Howrah. In today’s world there are so many rules and regulations like the CA guidelines, NCIIPC directives and also the power utilities are critical information infrastructure and a mandate from the Ministry of Power. Earlier, we had IT Act 2000, with that we had SPDI (Sensitive Personal Data or Information) and it was rules at that point of time and now 50% of it has become an ACT after 23 years as DPDP.
Prasun Banerjee, General Manager – Legal & Compliance, Vision RX Lab
From a legal point of view, the major challenge that DPDP will bring in every working environment is awareness. The main challenge that we are facing in India is to create awareness and to make people understand how to deal with the data. So, this entire sensitization requires some time and meticulous exercise to be given to each employee who is actually dealing with personal data of a person.
Prakash Sharma, CIO, Kredent Group
It is a good opportunity for all the CIOs and CISOs to talk to their management about the IT budget. We need to create data capturing managements, strengthen our security to protect this data from breaching.
Sourav Das, Group Chief of Digital & IT, Rupa & Company
The biggest challenge that a CIO is facing is change management. DPDP comes with a RS 250 crores fine. It calls for an extreme level of discipline, one you have to take consent, second, you have to get the data off when you are not using it.
Sangram Pattanayak, Head - IT, Indorama India
We are in the process of implementing a standardized ERP. We were on SAP platform and our group was thinking of implementing it across the globe for our fertilizer division. So, we were thinking about SAP as well as Oracle Fusion at that time. We had a discussion with both the companies regarding the data center outside India as the DPDP compliance will not be fulfilled. They also advised to have the database in India only. That is why we have gone for the India data center.
Panel II - Why Cloud Azurance?
Arijit Dasgupta, Head IT, Rupa & Company
Maintenance is the major challenge in on-prem stacks. You have to keep updating databases, operating systems, virtualization etc. Maintaining a data center along with DR is a big deal. You have to take care of security, infrastructure, networking etc.
Subrata Roy, Senior GM - IT, Skipper
We have migrated to SAP Hana, that is also a migration as the compute has changed and with the Cloud coming in these flexibilities are coming. Cloud is also scalable and you do not have to have your own resources.
Arup Majumder, Global DBA, OnProcess Technology
From the very beginning we had a complete Microsoft licensing specially to get the hybrid benefits. We had the core licensing with Software Assurance. We were also thinking of shifting to cloud computing so that administering IT infrastructure, the regular maintenance etc. becomes simple, cost-effective and work-effective.
