Maha Kumbh 2025, one of the world's largest religious gatherings, has drawn millions of devotees to Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. While the festival holds deep spiritual significance, authorities are facing challenges with the spread of misleading and offensive content on social media.
To curb misinformation and protect the dignity of devotees, the Uttar Pradesh Police have filed 13 FIRs against 140 social media accounts accused of sharing false narratives and inappropriate videos of women pilgrims. Law enforcement agencies have intensified their digital surveillance to maintain the event’s sanctity.
Maha Kumbh Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vaibhav Krishna confirmed that legal proceedings are underway against individuals responsible for circulating misleading content and objectionable videos. Several accounts on Instagram and Telegram were found sharing explicit footage of women bathing at the Triveni Sangam, prompting swift police action.
On February 17, an Instagram account was reported for posting inappropriate content, and two days later, on February 19, another FIR was lodged against a Telegram channel allegedly selling such material. In response, Uttar Pradesh police chief Prashant Kumar directed authorities to collaborate with Meta (Instagram’s parent company) to track down those responsible.
With millions of pilgrims attending Maha Kumbh 2025, the UP government has deployed a dedicated cyber unit to monitor fake news, misinformation, and privacy violations. Officials assure that social media surveillance remains a top priority to prevent future incidents and ensure devotees can participate in the festival without fear of digital exploitation.
According to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Maha Kumbh 2025 has already witnessed a staggering 620 million (62 crore) devotees taking a dip in the holy waters. The event is expected to see an even greater influx on February 26, Maha Shivratri, marking the grand conclusion of the festival.
Authorities have assured that all necessary arrangements are in place to accommodate the massive crowds and ensure a safe and smooth experience for pilgrims.
Speaking at the Unicorn Companies Conclave in Agra, CM Yogi Adityanath highlighted the cultural and spiritual significance of the Maha Kumbh. He described it as “one of the rarest events of the century”, emphasizing its deep-rooted traditions dating back to ancient India.
The Maha Kumbh, held every 12 years, serves as a sacred moment of unity and devotion, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds to celebrate India’s rich spiritual heritage.
As Maha Kumbh 2025 nears its grand finale on Maha Shivratri (February 26), authorities remain firm in protecting the event from misinformation and privacy breaches. The UP government’s crackdown on social media misuseunderscores its commitment to preserving both the faith of devotees and the integrity of the festival.
By striking a balance between spiritual tradition and digital vigilance, Maha Kumbh 2025 stands as a testament to India’s evolving approach to faith, security, and technological responsibility.
