The milestone transaction, executed on Mastercard’s payment network in New Delhi, highlights India’s rapid emergence as a leader in AI-driven commerce, reinforcing secure, tokenized and interoperable payment experiences powered by trusted AI frameworks.
AI-driven transactions are rapidly transforming how Indians shop, pay and manage their digital interactions. From product discovery to subscription renewals, everyday activities are increasingly shifting to AI-powered assistance, positioning India at the forefront of agentic commerce adoption.
At the India AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi, Mastercard announced the completion of a fully authenticated agentic commerce transaction on its payment network. The development expands the company’s global agentic commerce payment capabilities into the Asia Pacific region.
Aligned with Mastercard’s Agent Pay Framework, the transaction was fully tokenized and authenticated using security features widely adopted in India. The move underscores the company’s focus on delivering secure and trusted AI-powered commerce experiences.
Building the foundation for agentic commerce
Mastercard stated that agentic commerce on its cards enables interoperability between issuers, acquirers, merchants and payment aggregators, ensuring secure and consistent transactions irrespective of the platform or ecosystem partner.
Cards issued by Axis Bank and RBL Bank were used to complete the transaction. The purchase was processed through payment aggregators including Cashfree Payments, Juspay, PayU and Razorpay. Merchant participants included Swiggy, Instamart, Vodafone Idea (Vi), Tira and Zepto.
According to the company, these transactions mark a significant step towards enabling governed agentic commerce for Indian consumers.
“India is entering a defining phase in its AI journey—one where intelligent, in-flow commerce becomes the norm. AI has long solved discovery well, but payments pulled users out of the experience, creating friction and drop-offs. By completing a fully authenticated agentic commerce transaction on our network within a Large Language Model, we have shown what the future looks like: seamless, secure, end-to-end commerce powered by trusted AI,” said Gautam Aggarwal, President, India & South Asia, Mastercard.
Advancing secure AI-led commerce
To scale secure AI-led commerce across India and the broader Asia Pacific region, Mastercard outlined several initiatives. These include collaborations with leading Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI technology providers to ensure safe deployment, continuous engagement with customers, fintechs and merchants for smooth adoption, and awareness-building efforts among consumers.
The company stated that its agentic commerce push reflects a broader commitment to building a secure, interoperable and collaborative global AI economy, with India emerging as a key market in shaping this next phase of digital commerce.
