Meta Platforms is reportedly to end the cross-messaging support between two of its services, Facebook Messenger and Instagram, which was announced around three years ago, in September 2020. Due to this, people will not be able to chat with their Facebook friends on Instagram. This step may be due to regulatory scrutiny, as linking two massive social media platforms like these, could actually be a violation of anti-trust laws in critical markets, including the United States.
The feature allows users to send messages and make calls to each other regardless of which app they are using, which is expected to be discontinued in mid-October. After the shutdown, users will no longer be able to have active conversations with Facebook friends on Instagram. Instead, these conversations will be archived and can only be read. It is unclear whether Meta plans to delete these conversations in the future.
Meta has not yet made an official statement about the discontinuation of this feature. Only time will tell how Meta's decision to shut down cross-app messaging will impact users. However, it is clear that this is a significant change that is likely to have a major impact on Meta's messaging platforms.
