Microsoft is experimenting with Apple Account support in Edge, potentially giving users a simpler way to create browser profiles and sync their browsing experience across Windows PCs, Macs and Apple devices.
Microsoft is testing a new sign-in option for its Edge browser that could make the setup process more convenient for people who regularly use both Windows and Apple devices. The company is exploring the ability to use an Apple Account when creating or accessing an Edge browser profile.
Edge profiles are used to personalise the browser and synchronise information across devices. Until now, Microsoft Account credentials have been the primary way to access these capabilities, while the company has also introduced support for signing in with a Google Account.
The addition of Apple Account authentication would give users another route to access their browser profile without necessarily maintaining a separate Microsoft Account for Edge.
Apple sign-in appears in Edge testing builds
The new functionality has surfaced in Microsoft's Edge Canary testing channel, where two related settings have reportedly appeared. One allows users to enable Apple Account authentication for Edge profiles, while another adds a dedicated Apple sign-in option to the browser's profile menu.
Microsoft has also referenced Apple Account sign-in in the release notes for Edge Beta 152. The feature is being distributed through a controlled rollout on Windows and macOS, meaning its availability can vary depending on the user's device and browser version.
The move is particularly relevant as users increasingly operate across multiple platforms. Someone using an iPhone or Mac alongside a Windows computer, for example, could eventually have another way to establish an Edge profile without relying exclusively on Microsoft credentials.
Apple Account support could also prove useful for users who prefer keeping their digital identity tied to the account they already use for Apple's ecosystem. However, the feature does not mean that Edge itself becomes part of Apple's services ecosystem; it primarily provides another authentication method for browser profiles.
Wider account flexibility for Edge users
Microsoft has not announced a general release date for the feature, and the current implementation remains part of the testing process. The company could also modify how the option works before making it available more broadly.
For users, the most immediate benefit would be convenience rather than a major change to Edge's functionality. Those who already rely heavily on Apple devices could avoid creating or maintaining an additional account solely for browser access.
There is also no separate cost associated with using an Apple Account to sign into Edge. Microsoft continues to offer the Edge browser free of charge, and the proposed authentication option does not introduce a new subscription requirement.
If Microsoft proceeds with a wider rollout, Apple Account sign-in could become another small but useful step toward making Edge more accessible to people whose device ecosystems span Windows and Apple's platforms.
