Microsoft OneDrive faces DDoS attacks
2023-06-11
Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are a type of cyber attack where multiple compromised devices flood a targeted system or network with a massive amount of traffic, overwhelming its resources and causing disruption or service degradation. It's not uncommon for popular online services, including cloud storage providers like OneDrive, to be targeted by DDoS attacks.
Microsoft OneDrive was down for some users on June 10, 2023, after a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. The attack was claimed by a group called Anonymous Sudan.
A DDoS attack is a type of cyber attack that floods a website or server with so much traffic that it becomes unavailable to users. In this case, the attack targeted the onedrive.live.com domain, which is used to access OneDrive through a web browser.
Microsoft acknowledged the attack quickly and deployed mitigation measures. It said on its service health status page:
"We're investigating a potential issue and checking for impact to your organization. We'll provide an update within 30 minutes," the company said. "We're reviewing OneDrive telemetry that captures this impact scenario to determine the source of the service access failures and begin identifying a mitigation plan."
The company also said that access to OneDrive using the desktop client, a synchronization client or Office clients were not impacted. The attack lasted for several hours, but OneDrive was eventually restored. Microsoft has not said how many users were affected by the attack.
This is the second time in a week that Microsoft services have been targeted by a DDoS attack. On June 6, 2023, Outlook, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive for Business were all affected by a DDoS attack that lasted for several hours.
DDoS attacks are becoming increasingly common, as hackers become more sophisticated in their methods. Businesses and individuals should be aware of the risks of DDoS attacks and take steps to protect themselves.
