The worlds biggest PC operating system Microsoft Windows, has soon be getting a ‘Lite’ version which is being spiked as ‘Windows Lite’ is said to be made for dual-screen and Chromebook-like devices, as per The Verge report. The upcoming OS version is said to be the stripped-out version of the original OS instead of a completely new OS.
Although there is no confirmation from Microsoft on this, the report says that the upcoming OS could launch as early as this year. However, much of it depends on when the OEMs and chipmakers are ready for it.
The new OS version, design-wise could be similar to the Windows that one uses at today’s date. But it will be somewhat a mix of how Microsoft uses its Surface Hub with multiple screens along with Windows Phone Continuum interface.
Although Microsoft could be working on making Windows Lite useful for dual screen devices initially, it’s aim seems to be countering the potential rival – Google's Chrome OS. This also means that Microsoft could bring this into its Surface laptops and counter the Chrome books.
It has been reported that Microsoft may not call the OS as ‘Windows Lite’ by the time it launches as it is said to be an internal codename for now. The Redmond-based tech firm might drop some hints on the ‘Lite’ version in early May this year when it will be holding its Build developer’s conference in Seattle, US.
On a related note, Microsoft in January was reportedly testing separating Search from Cortana in Windows 10. The change was announced as a part of Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 18317. “Going forward, we’ll be decoupling Search and Cortana in the taskbar. This will enable each experience to innovate independently to best serve their target audiences and use cases,” said the blog post.
It is expected that Windows Lite will not be a separate Windows version that users can purchase, but a separate version only intended for lightweight laptops. Other than Windows 10 S, Windows Lite would get its own user interface.
Windows Central independently reports that Microsoft is reportedly working on a foldable tablet that should run Windows. This device would be code named Centaurus and it would be a larger version of foldable tablet that Microsoft works on and that has been code named Andromeda.
Microsoft is allergy working on the Centaurus tablet for more than a year and it’s expected the device would be unveiled by the end of next year. It would be the first of a new type of Windows tablets that works with two displays. According to Windows Central, the foldable tablet would run Windows Core OS, a name that been mentioned several times before, however it’s very likely that Core OS and Windows Lite are two different names for the same OS.
