A significant aspect of the conversation was the potential introduction of SpaceX’s satellite internet service, Starlink, into the Indian market
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Thursday, February 13, in Washington, D.C. The two engaged in deep discussions revolving around space, technology, innovation, mobility, and governance. Modi shared the update via social media platform X (formerly Twitter), revealing that the talks focused on fostering cooperation in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), entrepreneurship, and good governance. The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that the discussions were aimed at strengthening collaboration between India and the US in these rapidly advancing fields.
Starlink’s prospects and India’s space ambitions
A significant aspect of the conversation was the potential introduction of SpaceX’s satellite internet service, Starlink, into the Indian market. The service has faced resistance from Reliance Jio, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, over the issue of spectrum allocation. Despite these challenges, the Indian government has supported Musk’s argument that spectrum should be assigned rather than auctioned, a move that could facilitate Starlink’s entry into India. Currently, Starlink’s licence application is under review, with the final decision crucial to India’s efforts to expand its space industry and compete on the global stage.

The India and SpaceX collaboration has the potential to reshape India’s space sector, especially given SpaceX’s global dominance in satellite launches and its Starlink network, which provides internet access to remote and underserved areas. Modi’s previous visits to the US have laid the groundwork for strengthening technological and space partnerships, including India’s signing of the US Artemis Accords in 2023. These accords outline the framework for international cooperation in space exploration and lunar missions, signalling a shared commitment to advancing space technology.
Diplomatic tensions and US lawmaker criticism
Although the discussion has largely been viewed as a constructive meeting for bilateral relations, it has also sparked controversy among some US lawmakers. Democratic Senator Chris Murphy raised concerns about Musk’s influence, suggesting that his interactions with world leaders may be more about advancing personal business interests than serving the broader interests of the US economy. In response, President Donald Trump assured that he would address these concerns directly with Musk.
The meeting was also attended by Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval, underlining the importance of the dialogue and the strategic nature of the discussions. As Elon Musk continues to make waves, India’s growing space and technology ambitions could benefit from the collaborative potential between the two nations, further strengthening their ties in the years to come.
