The Minister of State (MoS) (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, announced that the new criminal laws, namely Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, Bharatiya Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, will come into force on July 1, 2024.
The new criminal laws in India actually took effect on July 1, 2024! These are landmark reforms that overhaul the criminal justice system, replacing British-era legislation. These new laws will replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively.
The changes have been made after a thorough consultation process, taking into account the reports and recommendations of the Law Commission of India. Arjun Ram Meghwal stated, “IPC, CrPC, and Indian Evidence Act are changing. After following the due consultation process and keeping in mind the reports of the Law Commission of India, the three laws have been changed.”
This new code will replace the IPC, outlining the substantive criminal law. This will take the place of the CrPC, detailing procedural aspects of criminal law. This act will supplant the Indian Evidence Act, setting the rules for evidence admissibility in courts.
The introduction of these new laws marks a significant overhaul of India’s criminal justice system, aiming to modernize and streamline legal processes to better reflect contemporary societal needs and issues.
