Viral social media posts triggered fears of a fresh lockdown in India, but official speeches by Prime Minister Narendra Modi show no such indication, with references limited to past pandemic lessons.
A spike in online chatter about a possible lockdown in India has led to widespread confusion, after social media posts claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi hinted at COVID-style restrictions during his recent address in Parliament. However, a careful review of his speeches in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha shows that these claims are inaccurate and lack factual basis.
No reference to lockdown in speeches
During his remarks on the ongoing West Asia conflict, the Prime Minister referred to the COVID-19 period only as a past example of how India managed global disruptions. He stressed the importance of preparedness and unity in the face of evolving geopolitical challenges. Modi noted that the current conflict could have prolonged economic consequences, but assured citizens that the government is vigilant and taking necessary steps. Importantly, there was no mention of a “lockdown” in either of his speeches.
Speculation fuelled by external factors
The confusion appears to have been driven by a mix of global and domestic concerns. Disruptions in supply chains, worries over oil and gas movement through key international routes, and discussions around economic preparedness contributed to heightened anxiety. Additionally, memories of strict nationwide restrictions during the pandemic resurfaced, prompting many to draw parallels without concrete evidence.
At present, India is not facing any public health emergency that would justify lockdown measures. The government’s focus remains on managing the economic and supply chain impact of the West Asia crisis, particularly in sectors such as energy and fertilisers.
Overall, the claim that the Prime Minister indicated a lockdown is false and misleading.
