Nvidia has announced a $4 billion investment split evenly between Lumentum and Coherent, committing $2 billion to each company. Both firms are US-based leaders in optical and photonics technologies, which are critical for high-speed data transmission inside AI data centers.
Photonics plays a central role in scaling AI infrastructure. As AI models grow larger, moving data efficiently between chips and across servers becomes just as important as compute performance itself. Optical interconnects reduce latency and power consumption compared to traditional electrical connections. By investing heavily in this layer of the stack, Nvidia is strengthening the backbone that supports its GPUs.
From a strategic perspective, this move reflects a vertical integration approach. While companies like Google and Amazon often operate horizontally, focusing on cloud distribution and platform scale to accelerate chip deployment, Nvidia appears to be tightening control over key components of its supply chain.
