Intending to make the dream to build 1000 Petaflops Supercomputer a reality, Nvidia is reportedly collaborating with the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi).
It is reportedly said that these two entities are planning to establish a research lab for Exascale computing, the first such lab in the country. For this, the Indian Government has also proposed huge investments to upgrade the country’s supercomputing infrastructure.
According to the agreement, the IIT-Delhi will offer the suitable infrastructure for the Exascale Research Lab, (ERL) including software and computing systems. On the other hand, Nvidia will provide Graphics Processing Units (GPU) accelerators to be used for the research and development. Besides this, Nvidia will also give access to its supercomputing and scientific application domain expertise along with the marketing support.
Dr Vijay Bhatkar, Father of Indian supercomputing has shared his views. He said, “The country had crossed the petaflop computer range and needs exascale computers, which are machines capable of performing 1000 trillion operations a second.”
Expressing his view regarding the proposed lab Vishal Dhupar, Managing Director at NVIDIA India said, “The Lab can potentially help India leapfrog ahead in the supercomputing world. The lab’s high-performance, energy efficient Nvidia GPU accelerators will enable researchers to build next-generation supercomputing technologies while maximising costs and power savings - a critical challenge to overcome for the success of any exascale initiative.”
