Developers and Open Source enthusiasts in India were active contributors since very long, even the Government didn't endorse it until recently. It was adopted by small and mid-sized businesses to some scale. But, now you see more and more Open Source used in all size companies. It has fueled innovations and resulted into flourishing business and startups, the trend that we witness now.
Success of the Digital India initiative depends on how less it receives resistance from technology implementation and how fast a mature platform can be assembled to support innovation in business. Adopting and endorsing Open Source is a great decision to build such an ecosystem.
We are in an Open Source Revolution where people collaborate to create and produce software/technology. Adoption of Open Source for Digital India surely has a high success rate and considering its advantages, it does deserve the increasing popularity.
Open Source is not just platforms and tools, it more about culture and practice.
It should be preferably added in the educational curriculum and the government should actively support Open Source meetups, workshops and trainings.
