Launched under the Ministry of Electronics and IT, the collaboration is formalized through an MoU, signaling a joint effort to democratize access to AI education and training across sectors and empower India’s digital future.
OpenAI has officially launched OpenAI Academy India, its first global educational expansion outside the United States, in collaboration with the IndiaAI Mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). This landmark initiative aims to democratize access to AI education and training, accelerate AI skill development, and strengthen India’s position as a global hub for artificial intelligence talent.
The launch is part of a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between OpenAI and the IndiaAI Mission, reflecting a shared vision to empower India’s youth, professionals, and innovators through high-quality AI learning platforms. The OpenAI Academy will offer curated courses, hands-on training, and real-world AI applications tailored for students, educators, developers, and startups across the country.
Present at the launch, Abhishek Singh, CEO of the IndiaAI Mission, highlighted that a key hurdle in accelerating AI development in India has been the limited access to computing power. He added that this challenge is now being tackled by offering approximately 34,000 GPUs at highly affordable rates—under one dollar per GPU hour—which is substantially cheaper than global pricing.

Designed to complement the IndiaAI Mission’s goals of inclusive innovation and skilling, the academy will provide structured programs covering AI fundamentals, ethics, coding with AI, and emerging technologies like generative AI and large language models. This platform will be made accessible to universities, public institutions, and private learning centers, ensuring wide reach, especially in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
With India’s growing digital economy, increasing internet penetration, and a strong base of young tech-savvy talent, the partnership is strategically positioned to fuel AI careers in India and expand AI awareness programs. It also aims to support the development of AI solutions for critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and governance.
Through this launch, OpenAI reinforces its commitment to responsible AI development and knowledge-sharing, while India takes a significant step toward achieving its ‘AI for All’ vision and building a future-ready workforce under the IndiaAI Mission.
