The move allows developers to manage coding workflows, review AI-generated outputs, and monitor remote development tasks directly from smartphones as competition in the AI-assisted software development market continues to grow.
OpenAI has expanded its AI-powered coding assistant Codex to the ChatGPT mobile application, marking a significant step in the company’s efforts to strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving developer tools market.
The rollout comes as competition intensifies among AI firms building coding-focused assistants and enterprise productivity platforms. Industry observers say the move reflects OpenAI’s increasing focus on software development workflows, particularly as rival AI company Anthropic gains traction among developers with its Claude family of AI models.
OpenAI said the mobile version of Codex is designed to help developers stay connected to coding projects even when away from their primary workstations. Through the ChatGPT mobile app, users can monitor active coding sessions, review outputs generated by the AI system, and guide ongoing tasks remotely.
The company noted that users can respond to prompts, modify instructions mid-task, approve actions, or provide additional input while AI-driven development work continues in the background across connected systems.
Mobile experience built for AI-assisted development
According to OpenAI, the new mobile integration is intended to function as a complete workflow management experience rather than a simple companion app for remote access.
Developers can navigate between multiple coding sessions, switch between AI models, review generated code, and launch fresh development tasks directly from smartphones. The system also provides real-time updates from connected environments, including screenshots, terminal outputs, test results, code differences, and approval notifications.
OpenAI emphasised that sensitive files, credentials, and system permissions remain stored on the original machine where Codex is operating. Only task updates and workflow information are streamed to the mobile application.
The feature is currently rolling out in preview for both iPhone and Android users across supported regions. OpenAI said access will be available across multiple subscription tiers, including Free and Go plans. Users are required to update both the ChatGPT mobile application and the Codex app on macOS to use the feature. Support for Windows integration is expected at a later stage.
Competition in AI developer tools intensifies
The mobile rollout follows a broader expansion of Codex announced by OpenAI earlier this year. The company recently upgraded the platform from a code-generation assistant into a more advanced AI workspace capable of interacting with applications, automating tasks, and operating software tools with limited human intervention.
The update was released around the same time Anthropic introduced its latest Claude Opus model, underscoring the growing rivalry among AI companies competing for dominance in coding, automation, and enterprise productivity solutions.
