With OpenAI introducing Canvas, ChatGPT will soon get a new interface. Canvas, which is meant for writing and coding projects, opens in a separate window, allowing users and ChatGPT to collaborate on a project. Currently in beta form, Canvas is the first major update to ChatGPT’s visual interface since it was launched two years ago.
OpenAI said that Canvas was built with GPT-4o and can be manually selected in the model picker while in beta. “Starting today we’re rolling out canvas to ChatGPT Plus and Team users globally. Enterprise and Edu users will get access next week,” said OpenAI. The company is planning to make the new interface available to all ChatGPT Free users when it’s out of beta.
"With canvas, ChatGPT gains a better understanding of the context of what you're trying to achieve," OpenAI stated. Users can highlight specific sections to direct ChatGPT’s attention precisely where needed. "Like a copy editor or code reviewer, it can provide inline feedback and suggestions with the entire project in mind," OpenAI explained. A menu of shortcuts allows users to quickly adjust writing length, debug code, and perform other useful actions.
Canvas opens automatically when ChatGPT detects a scenario in which it could be helpful. “You can also include “use canvas” in your prompt to open canvas and use it to work on an existing project,” said OpenAI.
Users can include writing shortcuts like Suggest edits, which will lead ChatGPT to offer inline suggestions and feedback. Or they can change reading level, adjust the length of the document or even add emojis.
