OpenAI has unveiled Sora 2, its latest AI video and audio generation model, alongside a new social media app, also called Sora, designed to share user-generated content in a TikTok-style feed. The move marks OpenAI’s expansion into the competitive social media space, while continuing to push boundaries in artificial intelligence-powered creativity.
Sora 2 builds on its predecessor by producing more realistic, physics-aware video content. Unlike earlier AI models that distorted objects or created impossible scenes to match prompts, Sora 2 ensures that actions follow natural laws. For instance, if a player misses a basketball shot, the ball bounces off the rim instead of magically landing in the hoop—highlighting the tool's improved realism.
A social platform powered by AI and personal avatars
In addition to the model itself, the Sora app introduces a feature called “Cameos”, allowing users to embed their own likeness and voice into AI-generated videos. To use it, users must provide a one-time verification video with their voice and face. Once uploaded, they can appear in customized AI scenes—alone or with friends who have granted permission to use their likenesses.
The app’s feed mirrors that of TikTok or Instagram Reels, showing short-form videos based on user interests, behavior, and even ChatGPT conversation history (this can be turned off). Activity, location (via IP address), and engagement history also influence the recommendation engine.
To address safety concerns, OpenAI has added parental controls via ChatGPT. Parents can disable endless scrolling, adjust privacy settings, and manage who can contact their children. Still, experts warn that these features may be only as effective as a parent's technical understanding.
Access, safety, and future monetization
At launch, the Sora app is free and available on iOS in the U.S. and Canada, with plans for global expansion. The app remains invite-only for now, but ChatGPT Pro users can begin experimenting with Sora 2 without a separate invite.
Monetization will be limited at first, with OpenAI planning to charge users for generating extra videos during high-demand periods. However, as with all generative AI tools, safety remains a concern. Although users can revoke cameo access anytime, misuse of someone’s likeness to create deceptive or harmful content is a growing issue in the AI space, and legal frameworks remain unclear.
