Powerful DDoS Attack to Telegram
Telegram has confirmed on it has suffered a "powerful" Distributed Denial of Service(DDoS) attack hit its servers and disrupted services for about an hour, effected 200 million users . The hackers overwhelm a target's servers with junk requests.
Telegram allows people to send encrypted messages, documents, videos and pictures without charge and the users can create groups for up to 200,000 people, or channels for broadcasting to unlimited audiences.
It came as protestors in Hong Kong used Telegram to coordinate demonstrations over a plan to allow extradition to China. In a post on Twitter, Telegram said the disruption affected users in the Americas and "other countries".
Pavel Durov, Founder, Telegram said, a massive cyberattack on his messaging service originated from China. His comments came amid reports a man identified as a Telegram group administrator had been arrested in Hong Kong for conspiracy to commit public nuisance.
Many people in Hong Kong are using Telegram's encrypted messaging service to communicate without being spied on, organize the protest, and alert each other about activities on the ground. Later, Durov tweeted the IP addresses involved in the attack mostly came from China.
Police and protesters had pitched battles in the city on Wednesday over plans to allow suspects to be extradited to mainland China.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov later revealed that the attack was mainly coming from the IP addresses located in China, suggesting the Chinese government could be behind it to sabotage Hong Kong protesters.
The company still assured the user data is safe. A report says, earlier also the Telegram service was taken forcefully down using a DDoS attack during the political unrest to disrupt activists.
