In a bid to push digital transformation, RailTel along with Techno Electric will soon roll out edge data centres at 100 locations across smaller cities in the country.
RailTel CMD Sanjai Kumar told investors after the company's Q1FY25 results were announced that RailTel would have 5-10 edge data centres by the end of this year. Edge data centres are small data centres in a 10X10 room located at the edge of the network, closer to end-users and devices.
“This year we should have 5-10 edge data centers by the end of this year. But the next year we expect the things will be—after we see the experience—will be smoother,” RailTel CMD Sanjai Kumar said.
The edge data centres accelerate performance and lower latency of the organizations as they do not need to move the data to distant data centres to process it.
The primary aim of EDC is to serve hyperlocal content to populations around it and these will be all along railway tracks. With the help of localized data centers, smaller cities, and rural areas can be served with low-latency applications related to digital skills, financial inclusions, and digital literacy.
Surveying the locations has been started by Techno Electric to launch the services.
