Ravi Shankar Prasad takes charge as IT & Telecom Minister
Ravi Shankar Prasad Monday took charge of the Electronics & IT and Communications ministry. This is Prasad's second term as the minister of IT and telecom as he served the same portfolio during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first government in 2014.
Talking to the media during a press briefing this afternoon in New Delhi, Prasad charted out his priorities for both the portfolios.
Among his top priorities, he said, he will work towards developing a strong synergy between IT and communications industry. He said his ministry will work towards offering inclusive services to the citizens that are accessible, affordable and meaningful.
He also said he will work towards developing 1000 digital villages, setting up 5 lakh WiFi hotspots across the country and make sure the BharatNet program is fully utilised.
Some other areas, he said, he will immediately work towards are 5G spectrum auction, 5G trial and revival of BSNL and MTNL.
In the earlier stint, he served that ministry for two years and Manoj Sinha took over the charge in 2016. Sinha, however, lost the election in 2019 General Elections from Ghazipur constituency.
Prasad was also the minister for information and broadcasting during Atal Behari Vajpayee’s government and was credited to bring in lots of reforms in the radio and television industry.
