With over a decade of experience in sales, marketing, and business management, Vishal Gupta, Founder and CEO, Seclore has been spearheading Seclore’s operations since its inception. In a chat Vishal explains about the current data and cyber security situation and its challenges in India, protection of data, impact of data protection bill etc.
Cyber security landscape in India
The growing digital economy in India is now more prone to cyber threats and vulnerabilities than ever. Enterprises across sectors face an increased risk of data loss and permanent damage to their reputation. Considering these shifts, the Government of India has established a dedicated Cyber Security Division under MeitY that is constantly evaluating threats and the corresponding regulatory framework to mitigate cybersecurity risks. Similarly, the private sector is also coming forward to create a robust cyber security infrastructure.
Delving deep on this topic Vishal says, “To tackle cyber threats on an urgent basis, public and private sector players need to collaborate and develop capabilities powered by advanced AI and ML solutions. As compared to human efforts, these tools rely on large volumes of digital transaction data to detect and prevent fraudulent actions. By leveraging advanced technologies such as behavioral analytics, passive biometrics, and risk mitigation tools, industry players can identify good users versus bad actors. With growing investments in digital and technologies, cybersecurity will continue to be a powerful factor in India's digital ecosystem; therefore, all stakeholders must work together to develop formidable solutions that can create safer digital spaces''.
Protecting data in the cloud is critical
The pandemic brought an overnight change to the traditional working culture, resulting in employees working from remote locations and adopting digital solutions to streamline their work processes. Even today, as hybrid working becomes the norm in the post COVID world, enterprises are facing the challenge to keep their company data secure. Vishal points out, “This is because employees often use their personal devices such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops to access software and tools quickly, leaving sensitive data vulnerable. Without a data-centric security in place, sensitive information related to operations, customer data and IP and trade secrets can fall into the hands of bad actors. By securing the data in the cloud and personal devices, employees can freely work with company data and organization and do not have the constraints of specific infrastructures. This, in turn, helps organizations to keep their data secure while continuing to operate in a flexible working model.
Strengthening India’s data security industry
Seclore’s products enable organizations to access best-in-class data security technologies to ensure that their data remains secure and trackable throughout the association process without compromising productivity.
Talking about Seclore’s products and solutions Vishal says, “Our solutions are used by some of the largest defense and investigative agencies, public sector units, and numerous private agencies designated as "critical infrastructures" to protect their most sensitive information. Our offerings not only help strengthen our client’s security posture but also allow them to seamlessly collaborate with their internal and external stakeholders. Our solutions are also tailored to every client's needs and cover a wide range of data security aspects such as data protection, cloud data security, data privacy and compliance, and third-party risk management.
He also adds, “Additionally, we are investing heavily towards security training and building awareness in the entire ecosystem surrounding enterprises, based on knowledge, and thought leadership to help augment enterprises’ data security efforts.”
Impact of the data protection bill
The Digital Data Protect Bill 2022 proposes a thorough data protection regime while relaxing restrictions on non-personal data collection and cross-border data transfers. While the draft bill offers certain benefits to businesses, it also imposes hefty fines for noncompliance, indicating that organizations need to prioritize their data security.
He says, “Aligning business processes with proposed legislation requires new enterprise infrastructure and radical changes to existing security operations for many Indian companies. But one thing is certain: in order to comply with the new law, companies must take actionable steps to establish a comprehensive, legally defensible data protection programme. It is crucial to not only maintain a defensible data inventory, but also manage data access and third-party risks. Finally, it is imperative for organizations to revise their data retention policies to only retain the information that is required.”
To conclude
As the need for data security grows, it is important that enterprises pay utmost attention to data trends to secure sensitive information and comply with regulatory requirements.
In his concluding words Vishal says, “We foresee businesses drastically increasing their investment in privacy and security technologies to gain their stakeholders’ confidence and avoid paying hefty fines as new legislation emerges.Greater transparency in the collection and processing of personal data will become critical to user satisfaction. Businesses that value their customers' personal information will see an increase in active users and earnings when compared to their competitors.”
He adds,“As a result of these projected trends, a zero-trust policy while implementing cyber security will become the norm. The Inclusion of new-age technologies to protect data irrespective of the platform it is worked upon will result in smarter, safer collaborations. The continued focus on securing data will also lead to a huge demand for skilled professionals, contributing to the creation of new career opportunities in the data security and privacy space.”
