RIR Power Electronics Ltd. has inaugurated India's first silicon carbide (SiC) manufacturing facility in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, marking a significant milestone in the nation's semiconductor industry.
It is India's first silicon carbide (SiC) manufacturing facility at EMC Park, Infovalley, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The inauguration was graced by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, marking a pivotal moment for both Odisha and India, positioning the country as a key player in the global power electronics market.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by several key dignitaries. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi led the event, emphasizing Odisha's commitment to becoming a hub for semiconductor innovation. Accompanying him were Principal Secretary of the Industries Department Hemant Sharma, Principal Secretary of the Electronics and Information Technology Department Vishal Dev, and Special Secretary of the Electronics and Information Technology Department Manas Ranjan Panda.
Additionally, Prof. Shreepad Karmalkar, Director of IIT Bhubaneswar, joined the ceremony, representing the academic collaboration between RIR Power Electronics Ltd. and the institute for furthering research and development. Dr. Harshad Mehta, Promoter of RIR Power Electronics Ltd., and Bhavna H Mehta, Chairperson of the company, were also in attendance alongside senior officials from the Government of Odisha and RIR Power Electronics Ltd.
Odisha has launched a dedicated Semiconductor Policy and the O-Chip Programme to support the growth of semiconductor startups and promote academic research. These initiatives are designed to position Odisha as a key player in the semiconductor ecosystem by providing incentives, infrastructure, and research support for semiconductor-related innovations.
RIR Power Electronics Ltd. plans to collaborate with IIT Bhubaneswar for further technical and research development, leveraging the expertise of one of the country’s premier engineering institutes.
RIR Power Electronics Ltd. is making significant strides globally, with its products being sold across North America, Europe, and Asia. These products are used in critical sectors such as Railway, Defence, Power, Transportation, Aerospace, and Sustainable Energy, demonstrating the company's international reach and technological capabilities.
RIR has made substantial investments in cutting-edge technology, a highly skilled workforce, and sustainable practices to ensure that its new facility in Bhubaneswar meets global standards of manufacturing excellence. This project is aligned with India's broader mission to become a self-reliant hub for semiconductor production, positioning the country as a key player in the semiconductor and power electronics sectors.
The establishment of this silicon carbide manufacturing facility will not only bolster India's industrial base but also contribute to its goal of achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), by reducing dependency on imports and fostering innovation and growth in high-tech industries. The new manufacturing plant is expected to generate over 500 jobs, boosting local employment and fostering innovation in semiconductor technologies.
This investment underscores India's growing ambition to become a global leader in power electronics and advanced semiconductor technologies. The facility aims to support both domestic and international demand for silicon carbide, which is crucial for high-efficiency, high-power applications in industries like electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy, and industrial automation.
This initiative aligns with India's broader goals to enhance its semiconductor capabilities and establish itself as a hub for electronics and innovation.
