Spotify and Discord globally got affected after outages linked to Google Cloud disconnected both platforms. The outages were fixed by Google Cloud teams after a couple of hours. Both the platforms came back online after a short while.
According to outage tracking, the audio streaming network Spotify and the chat platform Discord were both unavailable for thousands of users. Over 138,000 customers stated they were having troubles with Spotify, while over 65,000 said they were having problems with Discord.
Spotify didn’t go into detail, but a case study posted by Google Cloud confirms they’re also a customer and that may explain the sudden issues for both services.
Spotify earlier tweeted: “Something's not quite right, and we're looking into it. Thanks for your reports! It later tweeted: “Everything's looking much better now! Give @SpotifyCares a shout if you still need help.”
The Google Cloud status page mentions a glitchy update to the Traffic Director component that Discord cited, as well as a timeline matching both services’ skewed period before it was apparently rolled back to a working version.
Google Cloud said, “The issue with Traffic Director has been confirmed to be caused by a recent release; the release has been rolled back and customers can now start using Traffic Director. We have identified a probable root cause and will be publishing an Incident Report within the next several days.”
