Tesla is prioritizing brand visibility and consumer interest before full-scale operations, while planning a supercharger network across key metros including Delhi NCR’s Aerocity, Saket, Noida, Gurugram, Mumbai’s BKC, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Bengaluru
Tesla has officially marked its entry into the Indian market with the launch of its first retail showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), signalling the beginning of its India strategy. The company’s second showroom is already in the pipeline, with a lease finalized for a premium 4,000-square-foot space in Delhi’s Aerocity.
Located within the Worldmark complex near Indira Gandhi International Airport, the Aerocity showroom places Tesla in one of the capital’s most sought-after commercial hubs. The lease, reportedly valued at ₹25 lakh per month, underlines the company’s intent to position itself among high-end retail and global business players. However, these locations are strictly for retail purposes and not service centers, according to industry sources.
Tesla is initially focusing on brand presence and gauging consumer interest before scaling operations. To support early adopters, the company is mapping out a supercharger network in key metro areas. In the Delhi NCR region, charger installations are being considered in Aerocity, Saket, Noida, and Gurugram. In Mumbai, the charging network will expand around BKC, Thane, and Navi Mumbai, with plans for Bengaluru also in development.
Retail first, manufacturing later
The Mumbai Experience Centre, opened on July 15, showcases the Model Y in two variants—Long-Range RWD and AWD. Test drives and customer interactions are underway, with deliveries expected by late August. The company has also listed 13 job openings across customer experience, retail operations, and business development, signalling a broader hiring push.
Tesla's entry follows earlier setbacks due to high import duties, which can reach up to 100% for fully built electric vehicles. Although the current import tariff stands at around 70%, regulatory uncertainty had previously delayed its India plans. CEO Elon Musk recently met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a visit to the U.S., discussing opportunities around mobility and local manufacturing.
For now, Tesla is opting for a retail-first approach, using premium showrooms to build brand visibility and assess policy direction before committing to larger investments.
