Embedded with adjustable switching frequency and current sense threshold feature, a new multi-topology DC/DC LED driver "TPS92690" has been introduced by Texas Instruments (TI). This current controller device will provide low electromagnetic interference (EMI) for automotive headlamps, fog lights and general-purpose area lighting. The TPS92690 is an N-channel MOSFET controller with low-side current sense designed to support step-up (boost) or step-up/step-down LED driver topologies.
This DC/DC LED controller includes a number of features such as separate pulse-width modulation (PWM) and analog inputs interface with common dimming control methods to adjust LED current or implement thermal foldback. Low-side current sensing feature of the current controller enables design of low-EMI topologies, such as the Cuk converter, while still maintaining a single wire connection to the LED load. It also helps to minimize power loss and provides analog dimming control. It is under-voltage lockout (UVLO), cycle-by-cycle current limit and thermal shutdown feature ensures protection against faults and abnormal operating conditions.
The TPS92690 joins TI's diverse LED driver portfolio that includes the LM3466, LM3409 and LM3421/3/4 DC/DC LED drivers.
TPS92690 is available in volume production from TI and its authorized distributors and priced at US$1.55 each in 1,000-unit quantities.
