Reliance Retail is reportedly bringing back Chinese fashion giant Shein to India, one of the world’s largest fashion retailers, through a strategic partnership. With this, Shein will make its comeback in India more than two years after its app was banned by the Indian government.
The ban on Shein was part of a larger crackdown on Chinese apps.
The report said that the country's leading retailer will sell Shein’s products through offline stores owned and operated by Reliance as well as through its app. Shein, which competes with fast fashion labels such as H&M and Zara, closed the last financial year with revenue of $23 billion.
The Indian government had put a ban on Shein from selling its products in India through its own app in the year 2020. The Shein app was blocked on grounds that it “was detrimental to national security”. While the Shein India website appears in Google search results, the website does not open in the country, just like all other banned Chinese websites.
Another popular Chinese etailer app AliExpress too was banned.
Back in 2021, Shein made a quiet entry in India via Amazon India marketplace. It featured as a seller on Amazon India's website for the first time during the company’s Prime Day sale. Shein is still there as one of the sellers on Amazon India.
