Uber has announced the acquisition of German food delivery firm Delivery Hero in a $14.8 billion all-stock deal, creating one of the world's largest food delivery platforms. The merger will combine Uber Eats with Delivery Hero's portfolio of brands spanning 99 countries, including Asia's foodpanda, Latin America's PedidosYa, and the Middle East's talabat. Together, the combined entity processed $236 billion worth of orders in 2025, underscoring its global scale and market reach.
Uber is paying $13.7 billion for Delivery Hero, having previously acquired a 25% stake in the company. As part of the acquisition, Uber will not take control of Delivery Hero's operations in 14 countries where it already has a significant presence. Instead, those businesses will be sold to New York-based private equity firm SSW Partners for $1.6 billion. This strategy is aimed at preventing Uber from dominating those markets and is an important consideration for competition regulators.
Uber has committed to maintaining Delivery Hero's headquarters in Berlin and retaining its workforce until at least 2029. The company has also pledged to invest €2 billion in Germany over the next five years.
The acquisition is expected to be completed in the second half of 2027. Once the deal closes, Uber will operate both ride-hailing and food delivery services across 58 markets, up from its current footprint of 34 markets.
