“Being a CIO today is the best (or the worst) time as one may think. Best because everyone says that digital is the way to go for the entire economy. Products, processes, business models, companies are all getting disrupted by the digital technologies and CIO is (or is supposed to be) at the middle of this entire disruption.
Worst time because everybody in the organization thinks that he or she knows more about technology than CIO, and everyone has a viewpoint on everything related to digital.
Most of the times a justification that CIOs give as IT people – our grooming has been more ‘inward’ looking while most ‘business managers’ would be ‘outward looking’. The truth is - the ones who have taken the path less travelled have made the difference.
I believe that each one of us can make this difference. While the basic ingredients like Integrity, Knowledge and a Bias for action are a must for each leader, CIOs need few more traits to become true leaders and the most prominent as per me being (7Cs as I call them) – Competence, Courage, Collaboration, Calmness, Commitment, Caring and Compassionate.”
