The West Bengal Cyber Crime Wing (WB-CCW), in a major breakthrough, dismantled two illegal international call centres operating in Kolkata’s New Town area on January 23, 2025. This operation, conducted in collaboration with the Eco Park Police Station and the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station, underscores the state’s commitment to combating cybercrime. The call centres, identified as Drashti Solutions and DSS Business Solution, targeted foreign nationals, predominantly in the United States, by impersonating representatives of reputed organizations like Microsoft. Using sophisticated technologies such as VOIP, soft-phone applications, and grey minutes, the operators deceived victims with scripted offers of fake technical support services.
The Growing Threat
Over the years, call center scams in India have evolved into sophisticated operations targeting victims across the globe. Fraudsters use social engineering techniques, impersonating legitimate entities such as tech support, financial institutions, and government agencies to deceive individuals. These scams often involve fake promises of refunds, lottery winnings, or technical assistance, with victims coerced into divulging personal or financial information.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the WB Cyber Crime Wing has emerged as a proactive force in tackling these crimes. Leveraging advanced technology and data analytics, the department has successfully tracked and raided multiple global fraud call centers operating under the guise of legitimate businesses. Recent operations have led to the arrest of key perpetrators, confiscation of equipment, and the shutdown of centers implicated in large-scale scams.
The recent cybercrime crackdown by the Indian Cyber Crime Wing has unearthed critical evidence about the modus operandi of fraudsters. From fake caller IDs to stolen customer databases, the investigations have highlighted how these operations exploit loopholes in global communication and payment systems. By disrupting these networks, the WB Cyber Crime Wing has sent a strong message to cybercriminals while safeguarding victims from further exploitation.
Despite the success of these operations, challenges remain in curbing call center scams in India. The global nature of these frauds complicates jurisdictional authority and cross-border cooperation. However, initiatives such as awareness campaigns, collaborations with international cybercrime agencies, and stricter regulatory frameworks are paving the way for a more robust defense against cyber fraud. As the battle continues, such actions are pivotal in ensuring a safer digital ecosystem for individuals and businesses worldwide.
