The state tourism department's new mobile app will guide visitors to verified attractions and transport options, as authorities also partner with the Archaeological Survey of India to restore 135 heritage sites statewide.
West Bengal's tourism department is preparing to launch a mobile application called "Kolkata Key," designed to help visitors navigate the city's prominent tourist attractions and available transport facilities, department officials said.
The app will offer verified travel information on the city's major tourist destinations, officials said, with a particular focus on heritage sites and the history behind them. Officials indicated the department intends to spotlight the legacy of Bengal's kings and emperors through the app and plans separate measures to develop the tourism spots it features.
Beyond sightseeing information, the application will carry statewide data on verified tour operators, hoteliers, transport providers and homestays, functioning as an official reference for travellers exploring heritage sites across the region, according to officials.
QR access and a statewide digital map
To widen access, the department plans to place a QR code on the tourism department's website. Scanning the code will let users pull up information on popular tourist destinations without needing the app itself. Officials said work is already underway to build a digital map covering all districts of the state.
Separately, authorities are also planning a heritage tourism circuit initiative called "Palace on Wheels," aimed at connecting sites along the region's heritage trail.
ASI partnership to restore 135 heritage sites
The tourism department has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to restore and renovate 135 heritage monuments and sites across West Bengal. Planned upgrades include landscaping, pathways, toilets, drinking water facilities, parking, CCTV surveillance, audio guides and souvenir shops at selected locations.
Officials said the department will prepare project proposals and development plans, while the ASI will provide oversight to ensure all restoration work complies with the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958. The ASI is also tasked with protecting the heritage character of each monument during renovation work.
Tourism minister Shankar Ghosh recently said the state government would take part in Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, scheduled for January 7 to 9 next year, using the event to showcase Bengal's culture, heritage and culinary traditions.
