WhatsApp has banned over 4.7 million Indian accounts in March, its latest monthly report showed. It banned over 4.5 million accounts in February and 2.9 million in January, while complying with all three orders received from the newly-constituted Grievance Appellate Committee between March 1st to 31st, 2023. Almost 4,720 grievance reports were received and 585 accounts were "actioned" during March.
WhatsApp in a statement said, “Accounts Actioned’ denotes reports where we took remedial action based on the report. Taking action denotes either banning an account or a previously banned account being restored as a result of the complaint.”
In its report, the company said that in addition to “responding to and actioning on user complaints through the grievance channel, WhatsApp also deploys tools and resources to prevent harmful behaviour on the platform. We are particularly focused on prevention because we believe it is much better to stop harmful activity from happening in the first place than to detect it after harm has occurred.”
It added that the abuse detection operates at three stages of an account’s lifestyle: at registration, during messaging, and in response to negative feedback, which it receives in the form of user reports and blocks. A team of analysts augments these systems to evaluate edge cases and help improve the company’s effectiveness over time.
