WhatsApp is said to be working on a feature called “kept messages” that will let anybody save a short disappearing chat temporarily. Disappearing messages are messages that users can choose to send to someone with a pre-set time limit beyond which they get deleted automatically.
However, users will still have the ability to “un-keep” the messages if they do not wish to save it. Once they select the un-keep option, the chats will disappear from the chat forever. It is not known when the feature will be released to users, however, WhatsApp is reported to be developing the ability to keep disappearing messages for a future update of the app.
The so-called kept messages will not be automatically deleted from the chat and remain visible for all even after they have reached expiration. Kept messages will reportedly have their own “bookmark” icon to set them apart from other chats.
According to WABetainfo, “This icon serves as a visual indicator that the disappearing message has been “kept” and will not disappear from the chat, even if the disappearing messages feature is turned on and the message has already expired. This feature allows users to easily distinguish kept messages from regular disappearing messages within the chat. It is worth noting that all participants in the conversation can delete these messages at any time.”
WhatsApp’s disappearing messages feature was launched in 2021, taking inspiration from apps like Snapchat which gives users a way to chat more privately. So far, users have had the choice to set who these messages can be deleted for— for themselves specifically (delete for me) or for everyone (delete for everyone).
