
YouTube removed over 9 million videos globally between October and December 2024 for violating community guidelines, with India topping the list for the second consecutive year, accounting for nearly 3 million removals. Child safety violations constituted the largest category of removals at 54%, followed by harmful and dangerous content at 16%.
Brazil and the United States followed India in video takedowns, with 1.04 million and 900,000 removals, respectively. Notably, 96.5% of flagged videos were detected automatically by YouTube's systems, and 55% were removed before receiving any views.
Channel removals saw a significant decline, with 4.8 million channels terminated in the last quarter of 2024, compared to 20 million during the same period in 2023. The peak for channel removals occurred in the first quarter of 2024, with 15.8 million channels taken down.
YouTube also addressed comment section violations, removing over 1.25 billion comments, with 81.7% attributed to spam. The platform reported that 99.7% of these comments were detected and removed automatically.
YouTube employs a combination of AI-powered moderation and human review to maintain content integrity. Flags for violations are generated by automated systems, the Priority Flagger program, and user reports. The company has reiterated its commitment to enhancing enforcement mechanisms to ensure a safe and compliant environment for its users.
