YouTube is rolling out a new feature designed to give parents greater control over their children’s viewing habits on smart TVs. Recognizing its popularity among all age groups, YouTube aims to address concerns about kids accessing the platform without permission or using accounts meant for older family members.
In a blog post, YouTube announced the introduction of a "parent code" feature. “We’re launching a new parent code feature that you can turn on to prevent kids from watching YouTube signed out or accessing accounts meant for older members of your household,” the platform shared.
How to Set Up the Parent Code
Setting up the parent code is simple:
1. Open the YouTube app on your smart TV.
2. Navigate to the Settings section on the homepage.
3. Select the Parent Code tab and follow the on-screen prompts to create or reset a 4-digit code.
Key Features of the Parent Code
Once enabled, the parent code will be required to:
· Watch YouTube as a signed-out viewer.
· Access accounts meant for users over 13 years old (or the applicable regional age).
· Remove accounts from the TV device.
YouTube highlights that this feature ensures kids cannot access unauthorized accounts or features on shared devices. Additionally, it helps maintain personalized recommendations by preventing children's activity from influencing profiles intended for adults.
This feature is being gradually rolled out to all users and will be widely available soon. YouTube aims to provide families with a safer and more tailored experience, giving parents peace of mind about their children’s online activities.
