OpenAI has acquired Software Applications Incorporated, a small but innovative startup that developed Sky, an AI interface designed specifically for Apple’s Mac computers. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
All 12 employees from Software Applications will join OpenAI, the company confirmed in a statement on Thursday.
Founded in 2023, Software Applications gained attention earlier this year when it unveiled Sky, a Mac-based assistant that allows users to interact with their computers through natural language. Sky helps users write, code, plan, and manage their daily tasks — and can take actions directly through apps while understanding what’s on screen.
“Sky’s deep integration with the Mac accelerates our vision of bringing AI directly into the tools people use every day,” said Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT at OpenAI.
The startup had previously raised $6.5 million in seed funding, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman among its early investors, according to its website.
The acquisition is part of OpenAI’s growing expansion spree in 2025. The company recently purchased Statsig, a product development startup, for $1.1 billion in September, following a $6 billion acquisition of Jony Ive’s AI devices firm, io, in May.
According to OpenAI, the Software Applications deal was led by Nick Turley and Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, furthering the company’s strategy to embed AI into everyday software experiences.
