Battery Fires Raise Flight Risks
Lithium-ion batteries have become essential to modern travel, powering smartphones, laptops, cameras and power banks.
But their growing presence aboard aircraft is creating a serious safety challenge, particularly when damaged, defective or overheated batteries enter thermal runaway.
A recent incident involving a power bank catching fire aboard a Las Vegas-bound flight again highlighted the potential danger.
In an aircraft cabin, even a small battery fire can produce intense heat, smoke and potentially toxic gases within seconds.
This explains why aviation authorities generally require spare lithium batteries and power banks to be carried in cabin baggage rather than checked luggage.
Cabin crews can identify overheating and respond much faster than if a fire develops inside the cargo hold.
The challenge will grow as travellers carry more rechargeable devices.
Airlines need stronger passenger awareness, crew training, detection procedures and appropriate fire-containment capabilities.
