AI Takes the Helm in 40% of Utility Control
2025-01-28By 2027, 40% of power and utilities will integrate AI-driven operators into control rooms, reducing human error risks but increasing vulnerabilities in cyber-physical security, according to Gartner, Inc.
The Gartner Survey reveals that 94% of CIOs in this sector plan to boost AI investments in 2025, with an average spending rise of 38.3%.
AI technology will transform the power and utilities industry. While human decision-making can lead to industrial accidents, AI-driven operations offer repeatability, precision, and unbiased performance when effectively governed.
The industry is shifting from traditional utility-owned assets to decentralised energy systems, with customer-owned intelligent assets like solar panels and energy storage driving circular behaviours.
These assets enable customers to optimize cost, production, and comfort dynamically. CIOs must develop intelligent operations to integrate these assets seamlessly into their digital ecosystem.
AI-driven operators enhance efficiency through real-time data processing, predictive maintenance, and automated anomaly detection.
However, this also introduces new security vulnerabilities. CIOs must invest in advanced cybersecurity measures, comply with evolving regulations, and establish robust governance frameworks.
To navigate this transition, Gartner recommends three priorities:
1. Enhancing Operational Efficiency: Identify key control room areas for AI integration and establish governance to mitigate risks.
2. Strengthening Cybersecurity: Implement quantum-enhanced security and conduct regular vulnerability audits.
3. Fostering Human-AI Collaboration: Train staff to effectively collaborate with AI systems while maintaining oversight and critical thinking.
By aligning AI strategies with business goals and fortifying security, power and utility CIOs can unlock the full potential of AI-driven decision intelligence.
