Bangalore : GitHub has announced record-breaking growth in India, with over 21.9 million developers now building on its platform — making India the second-largest developer community after the United States and the fastest-growing in the world.
According to the 2025 GitHub Octoverse Report, India added 5.2 million new developers in the past year — a 31% growth rate, accounting for 14% of all new developers globally. India also leads globally in open-source contributions, surpassing the U.S. in contributor base, and ranks second in AI repositories and GitHub Education users.
“India’s rise as a global technology leader is undeniable,” said Kyle Daigle, COO of GitHub. “AI is empowering millions of developers in India to innovate faster and shape the future of technology.”
GitHub projects that India will surpass 57.5 million developers by 2030, becoming the world’s largest developer community.
Globally, GitHub Copilot Free, launched in late 2024, has fueled explosive growth — with 80% of new developersusing AI tools in their first week. TypeScript became the #1 programming language, while Python ranked second, powering half of all new AI projects.
GitHub’s data highlights a defining shift: AI and open source are now driving the next era of global software innovation, with India leading the charge.
