Japan is positioning India as a key partner to expand advanced battery manufacturing, acknowledging batteries as essential to modern communication and mobility—from EVs and smartphones to data centers.
Recognizing this strategic value, a Japanese delegation of senior officials and industry leaders will visit India in early July 2025 to explore collaboration in advanced battery technology.
The initiative supports India’s ambition to build 30 gigawatt-hour (GWh) capacity in advanced chemistry cell (ACC) batteries, crucial for electric vehicles and renewable energy storage.
This effort aligns with the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, aimed at reducing import reliance—particularly on China—and developing India as a global battery production hub.
Japan brings world-class expertise in lithium-ion and next-gen battery technologies to accelerate India’s manufacturing capabilities. The visit is expected to cover technology transfer, R&D partnerships, and joint ventures.
Meetings with Indian government officials and industry players, along with site visits to key facilities, are on the agenda. According to a Japanese embassy official, the collaboration underscores Japan’s commitment to India’s clean energy and self-reliance goals.
This partnership is set to strengthen India’s EV ecosystem, foster green innovation, and power sustainable economic growth.
