In a groundbreaking move to extend high-speed internet access to remote and underserved regions, Starlink has partnered with Cisco to roll out “satellite-ready” Wi-Fi routers.
These routers, validated through a pilot program, are optimized for seamless integration with Starlink’s Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network, enabling reliable, high-speed connectivity even in the most challenging environments.
Designed to handle satellite-based traffic, the routers support both unicast (one-to-one) and multicast (one-to-many) communications—ideal for applications such as live broadcasting, public safety, and enterprise data distribution.
Advanced telemetry embedded in Cisco’s solution ensures end-to-end network visibility, allowing telecom providers to monitor performance, troubleshoot effectively, and offer service-level guarantees—a first in satellite communications.
This alliance also supports smaller, cost-efficient hardware, crucial for rural deployments. With India recently approving Starlink’s services and existing partnerships with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, these routers are poised to accelerate broadband access across the country.
Cisco is also engaging with other satellite providers like Eutelsat OneWeb and Viasat, signaling a major shift toward hybrid satellite-terrestrial networks. This collaboration marks a significant leap in bridging the global digital divide and redefining last-mile connectivity.
