The future cyber security landscape
2023-08-21
We have witnessed how the cyber criminals delivered a wave of cyber-attacks that were not just highly coordinated, but far more advanced than ever before seen. As technology continues to evolve, new avenues of innovation open up, yet they also introduce complex challenges in terms of security.
Simple endpoint attacks became complex, multi-stage operations. Ransomware attacks hit small businesses and huge corporations alike. Crypto mining attacks gave cyber criminals an easy foothold into company networks. 2022 was a year of massive data leaks, expensive ransomware payouts, and a vast, new, complicated threat landscape. And it was a year that saw cyber criminals up their threat game in a big way.
With the proliferation of ground breaking technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT), Natural Language Processing (NLP), cloud computing, blockchain, and more, has ushered in an era of transformative technological progress.
Secondly, threats against the manufacturing sector continue — from big game ransomware groups that steal victim’s data before encrypting it, to nation- state attackers seeking technology secrets, to company insiders looking for information to grab and sell to the highest bidder.
Adversaries continue to find new, more sophisticated ways to infiltrate networks, which poses significant risks to businesses of all sizes across every industry. The future of cyber is coming into sharper focus as organizations look beyond the tech-centric and threat focus toward positive outcomes that result from integrating cyber across the business.
Going forward, cyber has become foundational to business. Just as cyber threats shifted from an IT problem to a business problem, we also now see a shift in cyber strategies from IT to the business—ultimately to support strategic business objectives and growth. And the connection between cyber and value—impact—is coming into sharper focus.
While the rapid pace of technological advancement undoubtedly challenges the existing security paradigm, it also presents an array of promising opportunities for the field of cybersecurity.
