Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has voiced confidence that the incoming Trump administration will prioritize support for the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, helping the United States maintain its leadership in the field.
During an interview with Fox News on December 1, Altman highlighted the need for significant infrastructure to support AI development, which he believes the Trump administration will be adept at providing.
"We need to build that infrastructure here and ensure the US has the best AI resources in the world to lead the technology," Altman said. He expressed optimism that President-elect Trump would be successful in making this a reality, ensuring the US remains at the forefront of AI alongside its allies.
Altman also underscored the importance of keeping the US in competition with other nations, particularly China, in AI development, emphasizing the need for the US and its allies to maintain their leadership.
AI technology requires immense infrastructure, including vast amounts of electricity, data centers, and access to advanced semiconductors and computer chips. Altman also called on the US Congress to enact legislation that establishes guidelines and safeguards for AI usage, particularly as AI technologies continue to evolve.
"Society should decide how these technologies are used, not just OpenAI," he noted, stressing the importance of broader societal involvement in regulating the use of AI tools like ChatGPT.
As OpenAI's influence grows in the AI space, the company faces some challenges. Elon Musk, one of OpenAI's co-founders, has reportedly filed a lawsuit to prevent the organization from transitioning to a for-profit model, a move that has raised concerns within the industry.
