Following Zomato, Swiggy has now reportedly increased its platform fee to Rs 10 from Rs 7 per order on its food delivery service, marking a 43% rise. Swiggy introduced the platform fee in April 2023 with an initial charge of Rs 2 per order, before increasing it to Rs 3 in October, followed by subsequent revisions to Rs 5 in April this year and then finally to Rs 6 in July.
The platform fee is a small extra charge that food delivery services and other e-commerce add to each order.
Both Swiggy and Zomato, once known for offering free delivery and discounts, have steadily increased their fees over the past year.
The revised platform fee has become a target of outrage on the social media platform X. Several X users pointed out how food delivery charges have been increasing consistently and how ordering in has become too expensive to be sustainable.
Swiggy recently gained shareholder approval to increase its IPO fresh issue size to Rs 5,000 crore from the previously planned Rs 3,750 crore.
Among its new initiatives, the company also recently launched Swiggy Bolt, a 10-minute food delivery service now available in six cities. Furthermore, the company is also piloting a premium membership programme, Rare Club.
