Artificial intelligence may dominate technology conversations, but its share of the wider internet remains surprisingly small. A study by OneLittleWeb tracking 9,531 AI tools found they generated 144.5 billion web visits between May 2025 and April 2026.
That represents impressive 40.12% year-on-year growth, demonstrating how rapidly consumers and businesses are embracing AI-powered platforms. Yet those visits accounted for only 4.20% of traffic across the 10,173 major websites tracked in the broader analysis.
The numbers reveal an interesting contradiction: AI is already enormous within its own ecosystem, yet remains relatively early in the context of overall web activity. This suggests substantial headroom for future adoption as AI becomes embedded across everyday digital experiences.
The market is also highly concentrated. The top 100 AI tools captured 129.6 billion visits, representing nearly 90% of AI-tool traffic. This indicates that while thousands of AI products are competing for attention, a relatively small group controls most user engagement.
Chatbots are driving much of this momentum, as users increasingly shift from traditional search and standalone applications toward conversational interfaces capable of creating, analysing, researching and executing tasks.
However, website traffic captures only part of AI adoption. Growing usage through mobile applications, APIs, enterprise platforms, productivity suites and embedded AI agents means the technology’s actual influence may extend significantly beyond direct web visits.
The larger message is clear: the AI boom has only begun. With AI tools representing just 4.20% of tracked wider-web traffic, the next growth wave could emerge as AI shifts from being a destination people visit to an intelligence layer embedded everywhere.
