Anthropic's Claude Takes Aim at Office Software

Anthropic is pushing Claude beyond the traditional chatbot with the launch of Claude Docs and Claude Slides, signalling a broader ambition to make AI the primary workspace for everyday knowledge work. The move brings Anthropic closer to territory historically dominated by Microsoft Office and Google Workspace. 

With Claude Docs, users can ask Claude to create a document directly from a conversation, edit the content themselves, request revisions and collaborate with colleagues. Claude can also leave comments explaining its choices or respond when users ask it to modify specific sections. 

Anthropic has simultaneously merged Claude Chat and Cowork into a unified experience. Instead of users deciding which AI mode or tool they need, Claude can determine how to approach a task, moving from answering questions toward executing more complex workflows. 

Claude Slides extends the strategy into presentations, while Claude Design brings visual creation into conversations. Documents can be exported to Microsoft Word or Google Docs, while presentations can be downloaded as PowerPoint or PDF files. 

This is significant because the competition is no longer simply about which company has the smartest AI model. AI providers increasingly want to own the interface where employees write, research, analyse, collaborate and execute tasks.

For Microsoft, the relationship is particularly interesting: Anthropic is simultaneously a partner and potential competitor. Claude models are available through Microsoft Foundry and have integrations with Microsoft 365, even as Anthropic develops its own productivity environment. 

The larger disruption could reshape enterprise software itself. Instead of opening separate applications for documents, presentations, email and analysis, users may increasingly start with an AI conversation that creates and coordinates the work. The emerging battle is therefore shifting from AI assistants inside applications to AI becoming the application itself.
